Gospel: Mt 15:29-37 “The Healing of Many People”

Jesus felt compassion for the sick and incapacitated people who came to him for healing. He fed them with seven loaves of bread and a few small fish. They were all satisfied and had even seven baskets of leftovers! In this way Jesus has come to inaugurate the reign of God in the world.
The Eucharistic formula is evident in the narrative: Jesus took … gave thanks … broke and gave … and the disciples distributed the bread and fish to the people. In reality, Jesus was actually giving himself to the people as he continues to do so in the Eucharist. The people were filled with the physical food, but more so with the spiritual food who is Jesus himself. The reign of God has indeed begun because we can be united with God in Christ through the Eucharist.
