Readings for today

Two stories of Jesus calling his first four disciples. One thing that they had in common was that they were all fishermen. Another thing they had in common was the manner in which they responded to Christ’s call: they left their nets “at once,” in the case of Simon and Andrew; “at once” they left the boat and their father, in the case of James and John. In other words, in both instances, we see an immediate response on their part. These two details have much to teach us. First, we too are called to become “fishers of men” – that is, to bring people to God; second, we are expected to carry out our vocation with the same immediacy, avoiding any procrastination and setting aside excuses. To be called by Jesus is a great privilege. Let us not waste it.
