Today’s Gospel
And Jesus added this comparison, “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. As soon as their buds sprout, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly, I tell you, this generation will not pass away, until all this has happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Today’s Reflection
Jesus’ exhortation: “Heaven and earth will pass away,” reminds us that death is imminent, a reality that every person should prepare for. Yes, one cannot escape from it, and many of us are afraid to experience it. Since it is inevitable, we must accept it as part of our existence. So why harbor grudges or succumb to anger when, in the end, we will all die? Why allow resentment to possess us when we know that life is fleeting? Why resort to vengeance when everything is temporary? When death arrives, our good and bad deeds may be recorded in journals and kept in libraries, but who will care? While all else will pass away, Jesus’ words will continue to inspire one generation after another toward societal transformation. His teaching, “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34), will inspire humanity to work for peace and unity. His assurance, “Ask and it will be given you” (Matt 7:7), will give us the confidence to hope only in the Lord. His advice, “Take heart, it is I. Do not be afraid” (Matt 14:27), assures us that we can continue to do good in His name. His promise, “I am coming soon” (Rev. 22:7), gives us hope to wait patiently for Him. There is no reason for us to procrastinate or become indifferent. Jesus’ words are life-giving. They inspire, exhort, guide, advise, teach, and lead us to eternal life.
