Today’s Gospel
Jesus looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasury of the temple. He also saw a poor widow, who dropped in two small coins. And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow put in more than all of them. For all of them gave an offering from their plenty; but she, out of her poverty, gave all she had to live on.”
Today’s Reflection
At first glance, one might think that Jesus is biased against the rich people who offered more gifts than the poor widow who only dropped two small coins. However, if we understand Jesus’ message clearly, it is not about the amount of the gifts offered but the attitude of the person offering them. While it is true that the rich people gave from their surplus, the poor widow’s attitude was acclaimed because she gave all that she had. She only had two coins and gave both, leaving herself with nothing. Moreover, as a widow, she had nothing at all—no family, no stable status. The Bible teaches that widows should be taken care of and given special consideration so that no one takes advantage of them. Jesus praised the widow for dropping her last two small coins because she remembered being generous out of her nothingness. Generosity is not only giving what we have but giving even the last thing we have. It is a Christian charity.
