Today’s Gospel

And all who saw it were astonished at God’s wonderful work. But while all were amazed at everything Jesus did, he said to his disciples, “Listen, and remember what I tell you now: The Son of Man will be betrayed into hands the of men.” But the disciples didn’t understand this saying; something prevented them from grasping what he meant, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

Today’s Reflection

There are moments in our lives when we fail to understand the will of God. In times of distress, struggles, problems, and pain, amidst sickness, failure, heartbreaks, and confusion, we sometimes long for an answer we can understand. “Lord, what do you want?” This kind of experience is not different from that of the disciples. In the Gospel, there were moments when they also did not understand what Jesus meant. And it was clearly indicated by the evangelists. Yet, despite this failure to comprehend Jesus’ words, they remain with him. They did not leave. In their ‘remaining in’ the Lord, they eventually understood what the Master meant. The same is true with us. When we cannot understand what Jesus is telling us, when the burdens and worries of life cloud us when everything becomes incomprehensible, the first thing that we should do is to remain with Jesus. Stay with him. He knows better than we do. He will bring us to greener pastures. He will guard us as a shepherd guards his flock, so the psalmist says. Life’s difficult moments –moments that leave the mind wanting clarity -should move us to stay with Jesus and ask him for the answer. In time –in His time –we will understand what now is a mystery to us all.
