Today’s Gospel
Jesus told the people another parable,“The kingdom of heaven can be compared to a man, who sowed good seed in his field. While everyone was asleep, his enemy came, and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away.
When the plants sprouted and produced grain, the weeds also appeared. Then, the servants of the owner came, and said to him, ‘Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed in your field? Where did the weeds come from?’
He answered them, ‘This is the work of an enemy.’ They asked him, do you want us to go and pull up the weeds?’ He told them, ‘No, when you pull up the weeds, you might uproot the wheat with them. Let them grow together, until harvest; and, at harvest time, I will say to the workers: Pull up the weeds first, tie them in bundles and burn them; then gather the wheat into my barn.’”
Today’s Reflection
In a parable, Jesus likened the Kingdom of Heaven to a man who sowed good wheat seeds in his field, wherein an enemy also sowed weeds. When the crop grew, the weeds also appeared, and the servants proposed to pull it out. But the master said, “No if you pull up the weeds, you might uproot the wheat . . . Let them grow together . . . at harvest time . . . collect the weeds . . . for burning, but gather the wheat into my barn.”
Why does God allow evil and sin to exist, thrive, or be victorious in our midst? Why does He not intervene and extirpate those who are “weeds” of wickedness and corruption which only disturb, damage, or make difficult the lives of the good “wheat?”
To ask these questions reveals our self- righteousness, arrogance, and hypocrisy, for we have deemed ourselves better than others and worthy of the Kingdom. Only God can make that judgment “at harvest time.” The reality is that the field of our soul is a woeful mix of wheat and weeds, good and evil, generosity and greed. We must be grateful that God is patient and tolerant in giving us the time and opportunity to recognize, repent, and renounce the “weeds” in our lives as we reconcile with Him. Do it now, for we never know when the time of reckoning comes.
