Today’s Gospel

Do not judge; and you will not be judged. In the same way you judge others, you will be judged; and the measure you use for others will be used for you. Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, and not see the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Come, let me take the speck from your eye,’ as long as that plank is in your own? Hypocrite, remove the plank out of your own eye; then, you will see clearly, to remove the speck out of your brother’s eye.

Today’s Reflection:

In today’s Gospel, Jesus admonishes us not to judge. By doing so, He opposes the culture of stereotyping and judging people unfairly. He asks his disciples, “Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye and not see the plank in your own eyes?”  A speck is a tiny piece of wood while a plank is a kind of wooden board. A speck in the eye is more realistic because it is small but when you say a plank in the eye, it sounds absurd, right? Jesus says this to emphasize the things that hinder us from seeing the good in others. Deeper than this, the planks in our eyes are the things that hinder us from seeing our true selves and confronting our own weaknesses. /Vulnerasti, 2022
