Today’s Gospel
Then Jesus called his Twelve disciples and gave them power and authority to drive out all evil spirits and to heal diseases. And he sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He instructed them,“Don’t take anything for the journey, neither staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and don’t even take a spare tunic. Whatever house you enter, remain there until you leave that place. And wherever they don’t welcome you, leave the town and shake the dust from your feet: it will be as a testimony against them.” So they set out, and went through the villages, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.
Today’s Reflection
The mission of the disciples of the Lord is to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. And he tells them not to bring anything for the journey. This is an impetus that relies solely on the providence of God in the mission. Along the way, there will be people who will provide for the disciples’ needs. Jesus knows this. That is why he tells them to enter any house that welcomes them. Jesus also instructs them what to do when they are not welcomed, to shake the dust off their feet. This is a reality of the mission that Jesus knew even before. Not all people that we go to will welcome the preaching that we have. There will be those who will welcome us, but there will also be those who will reject us. Nevertheless, the mission continues. We cannot force the hearts of the people to accept the faith. We can only do so much. But in spite of these episodes of rejection, we have to take courage and continue in our missionary task, for the Lord provides. He tells us not to bring anything, so we rely solely on Him. Moreover, we bring nothing else so that when we come to the people in different places, the first and only thing they see is the disciple whom the Lord sent, and nothing else. May the people see in us Jesus, who sent us to a mission.
