Bishop Pedro de Agurto International Conference

Bishop Pedro de Agurto International Conference

Date: November 25-27, 2018
Where: Bayfront Hotel

Most Rev. Bishop Pedro de Agurto, OSA was appointed to become the first bishop of the Diocese of Cebu, when it was created in 1595. He served from 1595-1608. Bishop Agurto showed the same wisdom and zeal as the new leader in the diocese. As soon as he arrived he called for a Synod to standardize ecclesiastical norms in the adminitration of the Sacraments. He also corrected a Bisaya catechism and made wise decisions on re-establishing ecclesiastical disciplines and became an ardent promoter of the devotion to the Santo Niño de Cebú. Despite impossibilities, he managed to do pastoral visitions to his jurisdictions such as Samar and Leyte.

More information about him then will be shared in the conference that will be held from November 25-27, 2018 at Bayfront Hotel.

The Basilica chose to hold this conference in time for this year’s celebration of the Year of the Clergy and Consecrated Life by the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines in preparation for the 500 years of the introduction of Christianity in the Philippines.

We are inviting historians, the clergy, students, and friends to join in this scholarly conference about this man of faith.
