100 day countdown to 500yoc

On January 6, 2021, the Archdiocese of Cebu led by Archbishop Jose S. Palma, D.D. launched a 100-day countdown to April 14, 2021, for the 500th anniversary of the introduction of Christianity in the country. Present in the event were other church leaders of Cebu, the Augustinian friars of the Basilica, and the officials of the Cebu City Government.

The unveiling of the countdown marker was held at the historical marker of Magellan’s cross.

Archbishop Jose S. Palma considers the 500 years of Christianity as a blessing to all, “Today, as Cebuanos, we count the blessings despite the many concerns we have. We count the blessings [of] the past 500 years. Looking backward in thanksgiving, celebrating the present in joy, and looking forward with hope.”

Despite the prevailing threat of the COVID-19, Archbishop Palma sends a message of hope to the people that “There is COVID but COVID does not paralyze us. Because of Jesus, because of the Santo Niño, all of us in faith, becoming children of God. All of us in faith reaching out [to] each other.”

The entire catholic nation will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the introduction of Christianity on April 14, 2021, remembering the first baptism and the giving of the image of Sto. Niño during the expedition of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521.

There are also other activities prepared by the Archdiocese for the celebration such as the Pangsangyaw, launching of the social media platforms and website, National Mission Congress, Suroy-Saysay sa Sugboanong Simbahan, and others.

Meanwhile, in the Basilica, the Augustinian friars will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the arrival of the image of Sto. Niño, the image that given by Ferdinand Magellan to Queen Juan during her baptism and wedding with Rajah Humabon.
