Augustinians honored for conservation of Basilica and Magellan’s Kiosk

Cebu City, May 25, 2023 – On the First Cebu City Heritage Gala Night, the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission along with the Cebu City Tourism Commission recognized the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu (BMSN) and the Magellan’s Cross Kiosk- two iconic and historical landmarks in the Philippines.

The city government acknowledged the significant contributions made by the Augustinians of the Province of Santo Niño de Cebu – Philippines in managing, preserving, and maintaining both the Basilica Church and the Magellan’s Cross Kiosk.

Rev. Fr. Genesis P. Labana, OSA received the awards held at the National Museum of the Philippines – Cebu.

Meanwhile, several other tangible and intangible heritage properties were also recognized at the event.

The 1730 Jesuit House Museum, known as the oldest dated house in the Philippines, the Casa Gorordo Museum, the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House, and the Archdiocesan Museum of Cebu were honored for their significant cultural value.

In the intangible heritage category, Mr. Richelieu Colina was recognized for his outstanding craftsmanship in creating “Lagang” crafts.

Furthermore, notable institutions such as Shamrock Bakery, La Fortuna Bakery, the University of San Carlos, and the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (RAFI) were acknowledged for their efforts in preserving Cebu’s intangible cultural heritage.

The evening’s festivities also featured a significant moment for the future of Cebu’s heritage structures.

An ordinance was signed to preserve the city’s heritage structures in downtown Cebu.

The ordinance, which will serve as a guiding law, seeks to promote a unified and concerted effort in developing and preserving this historic area.

Mayor Michael L. Rama, Vice Mayor Raymond Alvin N. Garcia, and the Cebu City Council members signed the ordinance officially.

This legislation solidifies the establishment of the Cebu City Heritage District and sets the stage for a more comprehensive and holistic approach to safeguarding the city’s cultural heritage.

The recognition bestowed upon the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu and the Magellan’s Cross Kiosk highlights the vital role played by the Augustinians in preserving and promoting Cebu’s cultural heritage.

Their tireless efforts in managing and maintaining these significant historical sites have contributed immensely to the city’s rich cultural tapestry, ensuring that future generations can continue to appreciate and celebrate Cebu’s unique heritage.
