If you visit the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu (BMSN), you will most likely see men in vests holding cameras wandering around. Among them is someone who has witnessed the many changes the church has gone through—from a muddy field to cemented floors, from Spanish friars to Filipino ones.

Noe “Nonoy” Salvador, 84, born in IloIlo City, has been working as a photographer inside the Basilica since his twenties.

Despite the scorching heat, Tatay Nonoy was all smiles as he took a trip down the memory lane, holding his camera and a collection of printed photos in hand.

When he first started his career in 1965, friars prohibited any type of selling activities—one of which is his main source of income—photography. In 1978, a prominent actress visited the Basilica and asked for photos to be taken—that’s when Tatay Nonoy began his career inside the church.

Now, 45 years later, he spends 11 hours capturing photos of devotees who wish to keep a memory of their visit. But like many, during the pandemic, he was one of those whose livelihood was affected. Due to his age, he spent almost two years stuck at home. It was hard for him especially because two of his three children, as well as his wife, are not in the country. Fortunately, with the help of Señor Sto. Niño, he was able to overcome the hardships.

For Tatay Nonoy, he wouldn’t be where he is now if not for the Holy Child who has always been the foundation of his family’s livelihood—with his wife also working as a cashier in the church years ago.

By faith, with faith, and through faith, Tatay Nonoy believes he is already established and is now content with everything he has in life.

Indeed, the Holy Child works wonders in our lives—one way or another. /Gilbe Pelayo, BMSN Media Centre Volunteer
