In the light of being a devotee

May 15, 1565—- According to Rev. Fr. Benedicto Tao, this was the start of the devotion to Señor Sto. Niño right exactly where the Basilica Minore Del Santo Nino is being built today. It first dated way back in April 27, 1565 wherein the Spanish came to the Philippines together with 5 Augustinians and Legaspi.

Ever since then, it has been inked in our instincts that every January, we look forward to the feast of Sr. Sto. Nino or what we popularly call “Sinulog”.

We have been celebrating this annually and the crowd of devotees each year has been multiplying.

Moreover, Rev.Fr. Tao emphasized the significance of devotion in our spiritual lives, especially the role of Senior Sto. Nino in the prior spreading of Christianity here in Cebu.

He added that even if people have different ways to express their devotion, the most important picture to look at is how their devotion is growing gradually. With the opportunity to change and renew oneself, Fr. Tao preached about the Renewal Evangelization.

He told a story about how pride can eat us alive and break relationships which then gave the people something to ponder on.

“Ang debosyon kung dili ubanan ug misyon kay kimpang. Kung di kini ubanan ug pagbarog sa gospel values, kay dili kini balanse.” Rev. Fr. Tao stated.

We must always support our words with actions and there must be equilibrium. Furthermore, by virtue of our baptism, we are said to be missionaries- to share the Word of the Lord.

As we concretize our devotion, we are given the chance to get to know God deeper and love God even more.
In the light of the last mass for the 5th novena day, we have to dwell upon that devotion brings us to the maturity of faith and to prepare us for what is to come in life.

Again, another day closer to Sinulog has come to an end and the people have been blessed with the grace of the Lord. Viva Pit Senyor!
