You are my anchor

How far can a woman’s ship sail in a man’s world?

Today, there is no field where women have yet to show their worth. Women have shouldered all kinds of responsibilities with grand success. The entry of women into the maritime industry is a relatively new yet emerging phenomenon.

Since the sea is traditionally a man’s realm, many women are still reluctant to pursue a career related to it. However, this young aspirant from the Cadet Program offered by the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association is confident as her courage is anchored on her faith in the Holy Child.

From the beginning, she knew she would have to work extra hard to overcome the stereotypes and prejudices that often come with being a woman in a male-dominated industry. The strength of her anchor has been tested by storms of hardships, yet she remained steadfast and refused to let the winds of adversity drown her. Her strength and grit were drawn from her admiration to the Holy Child and these kept her ship sailing through the ocean of life.

She emphasized in an interview that she does not need to please everyone around her because the only approval she needs is from Sñr. Sto. Niño. Her gratitude to the Holy Child overflows as most of her prayers and wishes were answered. Now, she sincerely prays that she will be able to secure an apprenticeship this year and is committed to completing the 9-day novena in the hopes that her desire will be granted. She believes her devotion will put her into new horizons and help set her sails.

As a young woman navigating a male-dominated industry, she continues to overcome skepticism with her head held high. Her determination and faith continue to break through barriers and prove that women can excel in this industry just as much as men. Tumulak’s story is a testament to the fact that women can excel in any field they set their minds to and that with the right mindset and enduring faith, no wave is too great to overcome. /Keanne Marie Jandusay, BSMN Media Centre student volunteer
