- Zaccheus was short in stature. He was quite small, so when Jesus came to visit Jericho, he could not catch sight of him. But he did not allow his shortness to prevent him from seeing the Lord. He took the initiative of climbing up a sycamore tree to be able to see him. What is this story telling us? Perhaps it reminds us that, in our desire to come to God and establish a deeper relationship with him, we should not allow obstacles to discourage us. We have to find ways of overcoming them. Now, hindrances to our relationship with God can be both within and outside of us. We must learn how to recognize them before we can deal with them. It takes a lot of discernment to do this. God is there to help us, in this regard.
