Readings for today

In Matthew’s gospel, the origin of Jesus’ family starts from Abraham, the chosen people’s father in faith. Jesus then was born in the Jewish community of faith, a community that believes in one God (YHWH) who revealed himself to them and  offered them a love-covenant.

There were five women mentioned in the Matthean genealogy: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and the Virgin Mary. All these women had something extraordinary or irregular in their marital union, but one thing common with them was their having been chosen by God and made His instruments for the fulfillment of His plan for the chosen people. In a highly patriarchal and androcentric world, these women stood out as handmaids of God, intermediaries to the continuation of God’s love-covenant with his people, fully realized in Jesus Christ. May all of us also become handmaids of God.
