Today’s Gospel speaks of “the signs of the times” – a phrase that has become like a battle cry during the second Vatican Council and soon after it. By “signs of the times” we often refer to present-day situations that we should take into account in order to respond to the needs of modern men and to effectively proclaim the Good News to them. Situations change with time. Thus, there is a constant need for “aggiornamento” lest the Gospel message cease to be actual and applicable. We need to find new ways and methods of talking about God and bringing people to the faith. Of course this does not mean that the message itself of Jesus has changed. “The word of God remains forever,” one prophet says. It is rather a question of finding ways to deliver and render it comprehensible.
