Today we live in a world where distractions abound. We have shopping malls, entertainment centers, television or movies, and so forth. In some sense, life was simpler and better in the past. People were more focused on what they were doing and lived a much healthier lifestyle. Our Gospel reading today warns us against things that may distract us from living out our faith, or in more concrete terms, from nurturing our spiritual life. How much time, for example, do we dedicate to prayer, reflection, meditation, scriptural reading, and so forth? Sometimes we end up dedicating more time to work, partying, shopping, and the likes. In the midst of all these distractions, can we say that we will be ready when the Lord returns and asks us to give account of how we have lived our life in this world?
