Today’s Gospel

And Jesus offered this example, “Can a blind person lead another blind person? Surely both will fall into a ditch. A disciple is not above the master; but when fully trained, he will be like the master. So why do you pay attention to the speck in your brother’s eye, while you have a log in your eye, and are not conscious of it? How can you say to your neighbor, ‘Friend, let me take this speck out of your eye,’ when you can’t remove the log in your own? You hypocrite! First remove the log from your own eye, and then you will see clearly enough to remove the speck from your neighbor’s eye.

Today’s Reflection

Can a blind person lead another blind person? This imagery that Jesus gives us speaks strongly about our common situations in life. Many of us, morally speaking, are actually blind to so many things: some out of ignorance, others intentionally. To those who are ignorant they can be taught, like removing a speck from another’s eye, while those who are intentionally blinded by their own motives are like people with a log in their eye. It is too obvious already, but they would not want to notice it. They do not even want to remove it. In our following of the Lord, we must not assume that we fully know what the Lord is teaching us. Instead, we must continue to be disciples of the Lord lest we become blind men leading other men to blindness. We must always place ourselves at the foot of the Master, letting him lead the way in our journey. We are called co-sojourners because we are following the Lord together. In our following of the Lord, we pray and hope that the things that blind us from what is real and essential be removed from us so that we can appreciate those that are essential in life.
