Today’s Gospel
Then his mother and his relatives came to him; but they could not get to him because of the crowd. Someone told him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and wish to meet you.” Then Jesus answered, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”
Today’s Reflection
In baptism, the Church teaches us we were made adopted children of God. With the indelible seal placed upon us during the celebration of the sacrament, forever shall we be marked as God’s children. Still, as children of God, as of any parent, we have to grow closer to Him. And we do that by listening to His Word and obeying his commands. This is the condition he gives when his mother and relatives visited him: My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.” This is his clear message for us all in our growth as Christian disciples, we have to abide by God’s word. St. Jerome beautifully remarked, “ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” We get to know the Lord Jesus better in the Scripture. The fundamental parameter of closeness to the Lord is found in our obedience to his will as revealed through his word, the Scripture. Some of us, however, tend to reimagine the faith as mere membership to different organizations, that those who are members of this and that apostolate groups are the ones closer to the Lord. How far away from the truth are we if that is how we understand holiness? Listen to Christ. Listen to His Word. And obey what He wills.
