Today’s Gospel

Jesus said to his disciples, “Scandals will necessarily come and cause people to fall; but woe to the one who brings them about. It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone around his neck. Truly, this would be better for that person, than to cause one of these little ones to fall.

Listen carefully: if your brother offends you, tell him, and if he is sorry, forgive him. And if he offends you seven times in one day, but seven times he says to you, ‘I’m sorry,’ forgive him.”

The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” And the Lord said, “If you have faith, even the size of a mustard seed, you may say to this tree, ‘Be uprooted, and plant yourself in the sea!’ and it will obey you.

Today’s Reflection

Increase our faith. This is the response of the apostles to Jesus after his teachings. The apostles knew that forgiving is not easy. Even confronting someone who offended us is hard. Yet, in the teachings of Jesus, he clearly states that if someone has offended us, we need to tell that person, and if he says sorry, we need to forgive. We, too, like the apostles, may not always find the teaching of Jesus so easy to do. However, the apostles recognize that they need an increasing faith to do the hard things God asked them to do. We also need to do the same thing. We need to rely on and trust in the grace of God to have the strength to tell the person that they hurt us and learn to forgive from the heart. When we tell the person out of love, we can help them realize and correct their mistakes. In this way, we not only forgive, but we help the person to repent and become better. Sometimes, these teachings may seem hard for us,

but we can do them with faith. As Christians, we need to grow in our faith daily to follow Jesus’ teachings even when it seems so hard. For with God, all things are possible.
