Today’s Gospel

Then Jesus entered the temple area and began to drive out the merchants. And he said to them,“God says in the Scriptures, my house shall be a house of prayer, but you have turned it into a den of robbers!” Jesus was teaching every day in the temple. The chief priests and teachers of the law wanted to kill him, and the elders of the Jews as well, but they were unable to do anything, for all the people were listening to him and hanging on his words.

Today’s Reflection

When Jesus taught in the Temple,“all the people were listening to him and hanging on his words.” This is understandable for several reasons. First and foremost,  as the Son of God, He spoke with authority that came directly from God Himself. Secondly, He was believed to be the promised Messiah who would liberate the people from Roman oppression. However, perhaps the most compelling reason is that Jesus practiced what He preached. Unlike the religious leaders of His time, who were often self-centered, Jesus reached out to the poor, listened to them compassionately, and gave them hope. He embodied the message of the Law, prioritizing the needs of the poor over Himself and placing God above any form of self-righteousness.
