Today’s Gospel

And as they came down the mountain, Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man be raised from the dead. The disciples asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?” Jesus answered, “So it is: first comes Elijah; and he will restore all things. But I tell you, Elijah has already come; and they did not recognize him; and they treated him as they pleased. And they will also make the Son of Man suffer.” Then the d i s c i p l e s understood that Jesus was referring to John the Baptist.

Today’s Reflection

In the Gospel passage, Jesus identifies John the Baptist embodying Elijah’s spirit and mission. He does not claim that John is a reincarnation of Elijah but rather that he represents the essence of this revered prophet. John’s character and actions mirror those of Elijah, fulfilling the prophecy in Malachi 4:5-6 that Elijah would return before the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

John the Baptist’s role as a forerunner is of profound importance. He is the one who readies the people for the arrival of the Lord through repentance. Just as Elijah prepares Elisha for prophetic ministry and later ascends to the Lord in a whirlwind (first reading), so does John pave the way for Jesus, the Messiah. When Jesus began His public ministry, John stepped back, and His role was fulfilled. This testament to John’s faith and dedication should inspire us to follow his example.

We, too, are called to be forerunners in our communities, families, and workplaces. Our mission is to inspire those around us, offering support and guidance and demonstrating Christ’s love. Whether through a kind word, a helping hand, or a steadfast presence, we can positively influence others. Let us draw inspiration from the lives of John and Elijah and strive to bring out the best in others, preparing them holistically to become leaders in their respective communities.
