Today’s Gospel
Do not give what is holy to the dogs, or throw your pearls before pigs. They might trample on them, and then turn on you and tear you to pieces.
So, do to others whatever you would that others do to you: there, you have the law and the prophets.
Enter through the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the road, that leads to destruction, and many go that way. How narrow is the gate that leads to life; and how rough, the road; few there are, who find it.
Today’s Reflection
The Golden Rule teaches that if we want to be treated kindly, we should also treat others with kindness. This principle is found in almost all religions. It sounds simple and logical to say that we reap what we sow or receive what we give. Yet, why is it so challenging to follow? Jesus calls us to live with an active and committed love in our relationship with God and others—one that includes forgiveness and even love for our enemies. True love transcends all human biases and prejudices. This is the narrow gate that Jesus speaks of, for the simplest of all commandments is often the most difficult to fulfill. Therefore, if we truly long for God’s love, we must learn to see and express that same love in others.
