Today’s Gospel

Peter spoke up and said, “We have given up everything to follow you.” Jesus answered, “Truly, there is no one who has left house, or brothers or sisters, or father or mother, or children, or lands, for my sake, and for the gospel, who will not receive his reward. I say to you: even in the midst of persecution, he will receive a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and lands in the present time; and, in the world to come, eternal life. Do pay attention: many who now are the first will be last, and the last, first.”

Today’s Reflection:

Stories of significant success are commonly narrated with elaborations on how uneasy it was before it was ever achieved. Successful people often describe their triumphs and the applause they receive as merely the icing on top of the cake, or the tip of an iceberg, which hides underneath a stunning amount of stress, sweat, tears, hardships and sacrifices that serve as stepping stones for them to reach their goals. But then, such stories usually end with a remark that, “It was all worth it!”  This is how we view our worldly and momentary success.  If we believe that temporary victories are worth every ounce of pain and self-denial, how much more should we extol the permanent and lasting glory promised by Christ as worth fighting, investing and gambling for? /Vulnerasti, 2022
