Today’s Gospel

As Jesus walked by the lake of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. He said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. He went on from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John in a boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. Jesus called them. At once they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Today’s Reflection:

Four fishermen were called by the Lord to become fishers of men. They were invited to follow Jesus and they abandoned their nets as they would accompany Jesus in His public ministry. It presents to us the intention of Jesus why Peter, Andrew, James and John were called to be His first disciples. It shows us that they would be with Him, to learn from Him, and later on, they would be catching people.

This tells us that Jesus wanted to build a community of disciples who would later on share to others His message to the world. The Lord could have done it alone, yet; He has shown to us how important it is to be in a community that shares the same mission and purpose. But it cannot be done without having to let go of our own “nets”. Our “nets” could be our comfort, source of living, relationships; material things, position or influence in the society. This is not just the call and mission of the Peter, Andrew, James and John. This is our call and mission as well. /Vulnerasti, 2022
