Today’s Gospel

As Jesus was teaching in the temple, he said, “The teachers of the Law say that Messiah is the son of David. How can that be? For David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, declared: The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet!’ If David himself calls him Lord, in what way can he be his son?” Many people came to Jesus, and listened to him gladly.

Today’s Reflection:

Jesus, being fully God and fully human, identifies Himself not just as God’s son, but also as a member of the human family as well. His title as the Son of David explains that by the human sense of legitimacy, He has the claim of being part of the line and heritage of King David. But as the same God who was present and who was the author of David’s legitimacy for royalty, Jesus occupies the highest position and authority which is way higher than that of David. This understanding gives the people during Jesus’ time a hint of the depth and the superior kind of kingdom that He plans to establish. It will be a new Israel that is no longer limited by borders and lineage. /Vulnerasti, 2023
