Today’s Gospel

Now, to what can I compare the people of this day? They are like children sitting in the marketplace, about whom their companions complain: ‘We played the flute for you, but you would not dance. We sang a funeral song, but you would not cry!’ For John came fasting, and people said, ‘He is possessed by a demon!’ Then, the Son of Man came. He ate and drank; and people said, ‘Look at this man: a glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet, wisdom is vindicated by her works.

Today’s Reflection:

Jesus compared the generation of his time to children sitting in the marketplace, playing (v. 16), mindless of what is going on around them. Aware that children oftentimes change their mood and disposition, the Lord thought that his generation (and ours as well) is like fickle-minded children. They want to do things their own way; they lack conviction; they just want to play and enjoy; they think only about what is good for them. Jesus invites us to stop behaving like such children, in this case. Yes, we are called to become “childlike,” not “childish.” To hear and respond to Jesus’ call to discipleship demands deep conviction, which in turn should lead us to repentance and to accepting him as the Messiah and our Savior. This is the way a matured believer nourishes his or her life in Christ. /Vulnerasti, 2022
