Today’s Gospel

Jesus said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it happens. And when the wind blows from the south, you say, ‘It will be hot’; and so it is. You superficial people! You understand the signs of the earth and the sky, but you don’t understand the present times. And why do you not judge for yourselves what is fit? When you go with your accuser before the court, try to settle the case on the way, lest he drag you before the judge, and the judge deliver you to the jailer, and the jailer throw you into prison. I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the very last penny.”

Today’s Reflection:

After we hear the words of Jesus, there is an urgent call for us to follow him. We are challenged to respond quickly and decisively, without any reservations. We should not be like the crowds who can easily predict the weather by observing certain signs in the sky, but could hardly recognize Jesus as the Son of God despite the signs and wonders he had been performing in their midst. The Lord sternly condemns them for their hypocrisy (v. 56). Recognizing God’s presence presupposes spiritual acumen and discernment. Jesus invites us to develop the ability to judge for ourselves (v. 57) whether what we are doing at present helps us to become better Christians or not. If we find ourselves doing what is contrary to his will, then we must take the initiative to reconcile ourselves with him immediately. /Vulnerasti, 2022
