Today’s Gospel
On that occasion, Jesus said, “Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I praise you; because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to simple people. Yes, Father, this was your gracious will. Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father; and no one knows the Father except the Son, and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
Today’s Reflection
In His prayer, Jesus praises the Father for revealing to the “simple people” what remains hidden from the “wise and learned,” The simple ones referred to His disciples who, with their childlike faith, have opened themselves to His revelations of God and had started to believe. They are not as learned and clever as the Scribes and the Pharisees, the religious leaders, who considered themselves experts of Jewish law and possessing the knowledge and understanding of God and His will. In their pride, conceit, and arrogance, they reposed utter confidence in their wisdom and intelligence and cast aside the need to learn more about God or bring them into their lives. Until today, there are those with great minds and inflated egos who do not recognize their minuteness in the grand scheme of creation and tragically perceive themselves, not God, as its center. They have chosen to close their hearts and minds to God even as God continues to be open to them.
God gave us the faculty of the intellect, which allows us to be informed, think, reason out, and use intelligence in our lives. He also gave us the freedom of will to choose and decide what we are to say or do. From time to time, we face the challenge of finding answers to fundamental questions about where we came from, what we are doing here on earth, the meaning of our lives, and where we are going. As Christians, let us find answers to these questions from the prism of Christ’s teachings and commands as we humbly repose full faith and total trust in His revelations that we came from God, that we are here on earth to know, love, and serve Him, and that our final destiny is to share His love and happiness for all eternity.
