Today’s Gospel

Stay awake then, for you do not know on what day your Lord will come. Obviously, if the owner of the house knew at what time the thief was coming, he would certainly stay up and not allow his house to be broken into. So be alert, for the Son of Man will come at the hour you least expect.

Imagine a faithful and prudent servant, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give them food at the proper time. Fortunate, indeed, is that servant, whom his master will find at work when he comes. Truly I say to you, his lord will entrust him with everything he has.

Not so with the bad servant, who thinks, ‘My master is delayed.’ And he begins to ill-treat his fellow servants, while eating and drinking with drunkards. But his master will come on the day he does not know, and at the hour he least expects. He will punish that servant severely; and place with him with the hypocrites. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Today’s Reflection

Today, we celebrate one of the Church’s famous sons. The Augustinian family celebrates the feast of their spiritual founder and inspiration. Augustine’s sons and daughters are present in different corners of the world. They continue to be faithful to his teachings and continuously relive his love for the Church and her different apostolates. The Augustinians are in the educational, missionary, and pastoral ministries in the country. They promote the common life in accordance with the spirit and teachings of Augustine and the mandates of the first Christians in “sharing in common everything they have” to become more accessible in their service to the Church.

Paul’s discourse of the Thessalonian’s love for God as they increase their love for one another. He shares his gratitude with God for them in their “abounding love.” The good news from them brought by Timothy brings a “swell” in the heart of Paul in thanking God for them. He promises to visit them again for he was conscientiously in guilt of his insufficiency of giving them instruction in faith. He was also afraid they might go astray if not supported and visited by teachers of the faith. However, he encourages them to be assiduous in their faith, for God alone teaches through the Spirit in the different disciples who come to them from time to time.

Matthew’s parallelism with Mark of reminding his hearers to stay awake and “be alert” for the Day of the Lord is unexpectedly coming. While waiting, we need to be vigilant but not forgetful of our daily tasks. Will it come soon? We do not know, for the” Lord’s time” is not “our time.” Matthew on the virtue of being prepared and ready for the coming of the Lord. Are we ready to face our Lord when, indeed, He does come? Vigilance is encouraged as if the Lord’s coming is happening. We are people of hope, and our expectation of the Lord should not waiver.
