Today’s Gospel

Then he sent the crowds away and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” Jesus answered them, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world; the good seed are the people of the kingdom; the weeds are those who follow the evil one. The enemy who sows the weeds is the devil; the harvest is the end of time, and the workers are the angels. Just as the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so will it be at the end of time. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom all that is scandalous and all who do evil. And these will be thrown into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the just will shine, like the sun, in the kingdom of their Father. If you have ears, then hear.

or Gospel: Mt 13:16-17

But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear.

For I tell you, many prophets and righteous people have longed to see the things you see, but they did not see them; and to hear the things you hear, but they did not hear them.

Today’s Reflection:

Weeds grow side by side with the good seeds and both of them will be present during harvest time. When harvest time comes, weeds, which we consider bad, are separated from the wheat and set aside. Just like the presence of weeds among the wheat, evil also exists in the real world as a test of the perseverance of the good. Evil is often called the “accuser” or “tempter” to lead the person away from the divine sower. This parable does not only call the sinners for repentance but it also calls the good or righteous to remain steadfast and persevering in their being good. Hence, God does not look at what we are now but rather, He focuses on what we would become as He gives the sinners the chance to renew and repent.

AUGUSTIKNOW

The Augustinians founded parishes and built magnificent churches in the Philippines dedicated to Saint Anne, the Mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Hagonoy, Bulacan (now the National Shrine of Saint Anne); Taguig in Metro Manila (now the Archdiocesan Shrine of Saint Anne); Piddig, Ilocos Norte and Santa Ana, Pampanga. In addition, they also found the centuries-old church of Saint Joachim in San Joaquin, Iloilo. All these churches were ceded to the secular clergy after the Spanish colonial era.
