Today’s Gospel

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain. He sat down and his disciples gathered around him. Then he spoke and began to teach them: Fortunate are those who are poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Fortunate are those who mourn, they shall be comforted.

Fortunate are the gentle, they shall possess the land.

Fortunate are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall find mercy.

Fortunate are those who work for peace, they shall be called children of God.

Fortunate are those who are persecuted for the cause of justice, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Fortunate are you, when people insult you and persecute you and speak all kind of evil against you because you are my followers. Be glad and joyful, for a great reward is kept for you and God. For that is how this people persecuted the prophets who lived before you.

Today’s Reflection:

Most people nowadays think that providing comfort and spoiling their loved ones are the best ways to express their affection for them. This belief is true only if the process of spoiling or placing them in comfort zones does not stagnate others from growing into better individuals. The first reading speaks about comfort and trials – two things that God allows each person to experience to lead them towards spiritual growth. Jesus, in today’s Gospel, also reminds us through the Beatitudes that whenever we align ourselves to God’s will, every difficulty that we encounter is intertwined with a corresponding consolation. For every person that faithfully follows Christ, ordeals must be seen not as an absence of God’s favor, but as His own way of training or reserving for us some better things to come. /Vulnerasti, 2023
