Today’s Gospel

No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a bowl or puts it under the bed; rather, he puts it on a lamp stand, so that people coming in may see the light. In the same way, there is nothing hidden that shall not be uncovered; nothing kept secret, that shall not be known clearly. Now, pay attention and listen well, for whoever produces, will be given more; but from those who do not produce, even what they seem to have will be taken away from them.”

Today’s Reflection

One of the more popular lines in a movie is “great power comes great responsibility.” Understandably, those who show more capacity and skill are given more work by the superior, or the boss can rely on that person. We have to consider our individual capacities here; that is, all of us have something to give and are capable of doing something. We have great power. But those powers, those capabilities, were not given just for us to keep secret. No! We ought to share it with others, like a lamp lit. It was not lit for its own sake. A lamp is lit to give light to others. When God sends people our way, and we find that person very problematic and difficult to deal with, we ask, why is this person sent my way? What for? We are often solipsistic. But, most of the time, we actually have to ask, why am I sent to this person? What can I do for him or her? There is a reason for everything. And our presence for others has a purpose. With faith in our hearts, we continue in that wonderful ministry of presence and cooperate in the Lord’s magnificent work of salvation. We have a role to play.
