Today’s Gospel

Jesus added, “No prophet is honored in his own country. Truly, I say to you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens withheld rain for three years and six months and a great famine came over the whole land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow of Zarephath, in the country of Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha, the prophet, and no one was healed except Naaman, the Syrian.”

On hearing these words, the whole assembly became indignant. They rose up and brought him out of the town, to the edge of the hill on which Nazareth is built, intending to throw him down the cliff. But he passed through their midst and went his way.

Today’s Reflection:

People with little brains, little hearts, or little understanding can’t handle big and true teachings and ideas. It is just too much for them. They can only perceive these as inconvenient or cruel instructions imposed on them, or something too much asked from them. The people in Jesus’s hometown, upon hearing him teach, are supposed to place their faith in Him, just like how the people from other places did. However, their familiarity with Jesus hindered them to give an amount of faith and trust that people from other places can easily give. Thus, when Jesus pointed out to them their inabilities to comprehend and their incapacity to give the kind of faith due for him, they reacted as a mob, manifesting even farther what they truly are. However, people’s rejection of God’s message should never discourage us from proclaiming it.
