Today’s Gospel
One Sabbath Jesus was going through a field of grain, and his disciples began to pick heads of grain, crushing them in their hands for food. Some of the Pharisees asked them, “Why do you do what is forbidden on the Sabbath?” Then Jesus spoke up and asked them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his men were hungry? He entered the house of God, took and ate the bread of the offering, and even gave some to his men, though only priests are allowed to eat that bread.” And Jesus added, “The Son of Man is Lord and rules over the Sabbath.”
Today’s Reflection
The Son of Man is the Lord and rules over the Sabbath. This is the exhortation of Jesus towards the people. This should remind us what the Sabbath is for. While it is good that we bring out individual and communal intentions in our celebration of the Lord’s Day, we must not forget that we gather at the altar not because of our personal reasons but because of the Lord. We gather because of the Lord, and we gather in the Lord. As such, we are reminded that the focus of the Mass is our coming before the Lord.
But we often forget this. Most of us choose priests who can make us laugh in the homily. Or we go to churches where they have beautiful decorations and landscapes. We have so many other reasons for choosing where to celebrate the Mass. While these practical reasons are understandable, we must not forget why we go to Church: for the Lord. He IS the reason, not us. And when we look for something else, we fail to realize what we are missing in our lives. We are missing the Lord himself. He is there, present. May we never lose sight of him. May we always remind ourselves; Jesus is the Lord. Nobody else.
