Today’s Reflection
Gospel: Mt 11: 28-30
July 20, 2023 | Thursday
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart; and you will find rest. For my yoke is easy; and my the burden is light.”
Today’s Reflection:
In today’s gospel, we hear Jesus promise us, “I will give you rest.” The rest Jesus promises to the burdened is not a simple respite in its general sense. It is a kind of refreshing break that travelers across a desert find in some oasis along the way. The promise of rest is not something new and has appealed to Christians throughout the ages, as it does to all human beings. In biblical tradition, there was God’s resting on the seventh day following the work of creation and the idea of the Sabbath as a day for rest. The sense of rest Jesus promises us is not that of idleness and absence of activity, but rather an arrival at the fullness of life in the kingdom and the enjoyment of an eternal Sabbath with God. /Vulnerasti, 2023
