Today’s Gospel

King Herod heard of all this, and did not know what to think, for people said, “This is John, raised from the dead.” Others believed that Elijah, or one of the ancient prophets, had come back to life. As for Herod, he said, “I had John beheaded. Who is this man, about whom I hear such wonders?” And he was anxious to see him.

Today’s Reflection

The person of Jesus was, and still is, a center for controversy. When they heard of His name and His deeds toward the people, they became curious about who He is. Some say John the Baptist came to life; others say Elijah or one of the ancient prophets. They thought he was someone great from the people of Israel. For us Christians, we also come to a point when we are confused as to how we see Jesus. Is he a friend, a savior, the Lord, our God, an enemy, an ordinary man? So many opinions were circulated regarding Jesus, and this has caused confusion among people. But the bottom line is that his identity comes not from any of us but from himself and his Father. Jesus is God. We pray that in our growing relationship with Jesus, we may mature enough not to domesticate Jesus but to let him be who he is: God our Savior. If we domesticate the Lord, we put Him on a leash, allowing Him only to teach and command us what we want to hear. Piecemeal Christianity that is what it is. But if we let him be, he will inspire us to become revolutionaries of heaven: revolutionaries of love for God and others.
