Today’s Gospel

I have come to bring fire upon the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! But I have a baptism to undergo, and what anguish I feel until it is finished!

Do you think that I have come to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on, in one house five will be divided: three against two, and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father the mother against daughter and daughter against mother; mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

Today’s Reflection:

The teachings of Jesus also bring conflict because His words challenge the people’s beliefs and values. The reception and fulfillment of the will of God can cause disagreement in the communities, even in the family. Not all of us will heed the call. Some will even discourage our desire to be faithful to the Lord’s teachings. The Lord knew these when He said He cam to bring fire upon the earth. His fire purifies the faith of the community. It rids hypocrisy, complacency, and stubbornness in the community. His fire also invigorates the community. It gives way to new life. This teaches us how Discipleship is not about pleasing all. Jesus reminded us already of this hypocrisy. The demands of following Him will cost us our old relationships to give way to a new one, a relationship with the Lord. Every time we are faced with these hardships in our relationships, may we always be reminded of today’s reading.   / Vulnerasti, 2023
