Today’s Gospel
As Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to have a meal with him. So he went and sat at table. The Pharisee then wondered why Jesus did not first wash his hands before dinner. But the Lord said to him, “So then, you Pharisees, you clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside yourselves you are full of greed and evil. Fools! He who made the outside, also made the inside. But according to you, by the mere giving of alms everything is made clean.
Today’s Reflection
In the Gospel, Jesus challenges the Pharisees regarding the true purity of a person. The cleanliness of the heart is crucial and more significant in our spiritual transformation than our external cleanliness. Likewise, Jesus does not deny the importance of rituals and religious practices of cleanliness. He points out the Pharisees neglecting inner purity and their hypocrisy in doing the rituals. Thus, we need to purify our inner hearts that give life to our external religious practices, as the two dimensions are significant for our faith and spiritual journey toward God.
