Today’s Gospel
Do not store up treasures for yourself here, on earth, where moth and rust destroy it; and where thieves can steal it. Store up treasures for yourself with God, where no moth or rust can destroy it, nor thief come and steal it.
For where your treasures is, there, also, will your heart be.
The lamp of the body is the eye; if your eyes are sound, your whole body will be full of light. If your eyes are diseased, your whole body will be full of darkness. If, then, the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
Today’s Reflection
Many inconsistencies in this world are by-products of the desire for security. To some extent, financial stability is necessary to sustain a good standard of living. Without money, basic necessities and access to utilities become problematic. However, when we focus only on material gain, we can become blinded to the riches that last, or lose sight of the treasures built for eternity.
As Christians, we are called to manifest the kingdom of heaven while here on earth and are ultimately destined to enjoy eternal fellowship with God in heaven. With this in mind, our Lord reminds us that the life God calls us to is not confined to the visible world nor to the wealth it offers. Jesus challenges us to examine how we view our possessions—whether we use them well or allow them to consume us. Let us ask ourselves honestly: Where is my heart truly invested? Am I oriented toward heavenly riches, or only to the fleeting security of this world?
