Today’s Reflection
Gospel: Matthew 5: 13-16

Today’s Gospel

You are the salt of the earth. But if salt has lost its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It has become useless. It can only be thrown away and people will trample on it.

You are the light of the world. A city built on a mountain cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and covers it; instead, it is put on a lampstand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, your light must shine before others, so that they may see the good you do, and praise your Father in heaven.

 Today’s Reflection

Jesus uses the images of salt and light to remind us of our task to exemplify the kingdom of God on earth. As salt, we are called to “add flavor” to the world through the word of God, and to “preserve” or “level up” that which is good, true and just. As light, we are called to radiate the light of Christ in the way we live, and guide those who may have grown cold or numb in their faith because of negligence or worldly enticements and worries.

These words may sound idealistic, but the good thing about having ideals is that we do not lose sight of our ultimate goal, which is to be one with the Lord in heaven. With this twin imagery, we are called to stand for what is right and what is godly, so that others may be led to God. Let us, then, following the example of the saints, give witness to the kingdom of God, and so lead others to rekindle their faith in God.
