Today’s Gospel

Jesus called his Twelve disciples to him, and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to drive them out, and to heal every disease and sickness. These are the names of the Twelve apostles: first Simon, called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew, the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon, the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, the man who would betray him. Jesus sent these Twelve on mission, with the instructions: “Do not visit pagan territory and do not enter a Samaritan town. Go, instead, to the lost sheep of the people of Israel. Go, and proclaim this message: The kingdom of heaven is near.

Today’s Reflection:

Jesus wanted to share His shepherding of the people so that He chose the Twelve to partake in His mission. Such mission comes from His compassion for the people who are like sheep without a shepherd. However, He chose not the learned and educated at that time, but the simple, ordinary and imperfect men who could be more receptive to the message than the highly educated whose minds are like cups filled with water that could hardly receive more water. It is because God does not look at what we are today but what we could become for He always brings out the best in us. Hence, He does not call the qualified but He rather qualifies the called. /Vulnerasti, 2022
