Today’s Gospel

The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure, hidden in a field. The one who finds it, buries it again; and so happy is he, that he goes and sells everything he has, in order to buy that field.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a trader, who is looking for fine pearls. Once he has found a pearl of exceptional quality, he goes away, sells everything he has, and buys it.

Today’s Reflection:

Today’s parable taps into our human sentiment when we experience delight in finding what our heart is delighting for. For an extreme example, we wonder what is the motivation of a person to buy or to acquire something that, at times, costs him more than what one earns. This motivation can simply be linked to our human and innate impulse to be attracted to things that can fulfill us. Saint Augustine describes this as desire. As humans, it is our goal to embody this same kind of desire when trying to find a reason to pursue the Kingdom of God. It may even come to an extent where we sacrifice something we own, whether it be our wealth, profession, or a love for someone, to remain with God. /Vulnerasti, 2023
