Today’s Gospel
And Jesus said, “What comparison can I use for the people? What are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace, about whom their companions complain, ‘We piped you a tune and you wouldn’t dance; we sang funeral songs and you wouldn’t cry.’
Remember John: he didn’t eat bread or drink wine, and you said, ‘He has an evil spirit.’ Next, came the Son of Man, eating and drinking; and you say, ‘Look, a glutton for food and wine, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But the children of Wisdom always recognize her work.”
Today’s Reflection
Jesus characterizes us as like children in the marketplace about whom other people complain. They complain against us because we do not conform to the demands and customs of the world but rather remain steadfast to the teaching of Christ Jesus. The world plays a tune for us, yet we dance to the sound of the angels. They want us to cry, but we rejoice, for the message of salvation is at hand. We, Christ’s disciples, have been rightly tagged as countercultural. We do not conform to the world and the age. Rather, we live here in this world while preparing for the home that awaits in heaven. This attitude of ours is not mere indifference to the world. Rather, this attitude recognizes the world’s ephemeral nature and the eternal life in heaven. A popular saying goes, life on earth is short, enjoy it, life in eternity is long, prepare for it. As children of Wisdom, disciples of Christ, we recognize this mystery. As such, we constantly aspire to be good here on earth, as well-mannered citizens, but not to stay here, rather, with
heaven as our destination in mind.
