Today’s Gospel
Then, looking at his disciples, Jesus said, “Fortunate are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours. Fortunate are you, who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Fortunate are you, who weep now, for you will laugh.
Fortunate are you, when people hate you, when they reject you and insult you and number you among criminals, because of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for a great reward is kept for you in heaven. Remember, that is how the ancestors of the people treated the prophets.
But alas for you, who have wealth, for you have been comforted now. Alas for you, who are full, for you will go hungry. Alas for you, who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
Alas for you, when people speak well of you, for that is how the ancestors of the people treated the false prophets.
Today’s Reflection
Jesus is telling us the conditions that will grant us blessedness. In a way, he is showing us that despite the difficulties we face here on earth, in this life, there is a reward that awaits in heaven. That reward, it must be clarified, does not depend on our efforts nor on our situation alone. It is God who rewards us. We also have to ask about the context within which these conditions are found. Jesus gives us that when he says, “That is how the ancestors of the people treated the prophets.” To understand this ‘blessedness,’ we must consider the lives of the prophets. We need not look far. They were persecuted and mocked, neglected, and exiled not because of their own selves but because they preached the message of God. In the same way, when we are hungered, persecuted, hurt, neglected, and made to suffer because we proclaim the Good News, we need not worry because God prepares a reward for us. This should motivate us to become authentic proclaimers of the Gospel: heaven. The rewards of the world mean nothing compared to heaven. The call, therefore, is this: choose God over the world. Choose heaven over earthly rewards. Choose Jesus over comfort.
