Compassion not Judgment

Today’s Reflection
Gospel: Lk 6:39-45 “Judging Others

Today’s Gospel

Jesus told his disciples a parable,
“Can a blind person guide a blind person?
Will not both fall into a pit?
No disciple is superior to the teacher;
but when fully trained,
every disciple will be like his teacher.
Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye,
but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?
How can you say to your brother,
‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’
when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye?
You hypocrite!  Remove the wooden beam from your eye first;
then you will see clearly
to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.

“A good tree does not bear rotten fruit,
nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.
For every tree is known by its own fruit.
For people do not pick figs from thornbushes,
nor do they gather grapes from brambles.
A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good,
but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil;
for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.”

Today’s Reflection

Most of the people if not all like to guide, give advices, and correct other people. Why? It is because it gives us a little bit of status, and it is very detrimental in our society. We are hasty to see the flaws and mutilations in other people. Even in some casual talks, much of our conversations are focused to the people who are not present in the table. How they fail, look, and reacts become the reason for us to laugh at them. Jesus did not deny that we, the created human beings do have faults however, He invites us to look to our own blemishes first. Today’s Gospel reminds us to be more aware of our own inadequacies so that we may be able to become tender in dealing with other people. Instead of talking how sinful they are, let us make a conversation that aims to help them. The challenge for us each day is seeing and looking to others with compassionate eyes like Jesus, and how to gaze at annoying person as kindly as Jesus do on the sinners. Let our perspective may not be the best one because we all need His mercy. Let us all pray for humility and a deeper capacity to see the lesser brothers and sisters of ours with compassion not judgment.
