As we celebrate the 456th anniversary of the finding of the image of Sto. Niño or also known as Kaplag,the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu has started its celebration with the first day novena mass yesterday, April 19.
Before the mass, the Sto. Niño image was enthroned at the Pilgrim Center which was led by Rev. Fr. Aladdin P. Luzon, OSA, Chairman of the Provincial Committee of the Santo Niño at 500 celebrations.
Fr. Luzon highlighted in his homily that the arrival of the Santo Niño in 1521 through the Magellan expedition and the discovery of the image in 1565 are events that left a legacy to our land that we are able to know the graciousness of God in the Santo Niño. He invites the people to believe that the events took place years ago is God’s providence.
Aside from the novena masses, the Basilica also plans to hold an internet radio program inviting Augustinian friars to share their stories, insights, and experience regarding the Augustinians’ missions from the past up to the present.
Moreover, an online concert will be streamed via Facebook and YouTube on April 28, 2021 at 7:30 pm featuring selected Huniño – Huni alang kang Señor Santo Niño – songs.
The finding of the image of the Santo Niño happened in April 28, 1565 when the Spaniards returned to Cebu through the Legazpi expedition.
Novena mass is from April 19-27, 2021, 5:00PM at the Pilgrim Center.
