Today’s Gospel

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming, he said of him, “Here comes an Israelite, a true one; there is nothing false in him.” Nathanael asked him, “How do you know me?” And Jesus said to him, “Before Philip called you, you were under the fig tree and I saw you.”

Nathanael answered, “Master, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” But Jesus replied, “You believe because I said: ‘I saw you under the fig tree.’ But you will see greater things than that.

Truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Today’s Reflection:

The Lord in today’s Gospel affirms Nathanael’s sincere search for God. He recognized Jesus as the “Son of God and the King of Israel.” Jesus accomplished perfectly the divine mission of redemption which Judea and Israel had long been waiting for. His mission of course reaches us as he commissioned his disciples to baptize all nations (cf. Matthew 28:16).

“Where did you get to know me?” This question surfaces in Nathanael whom the Lord knew and conversed with. He was invited by Jesus to follow him along with the first disciples (cf. John 1: 35-43). Indeed Christ’s call changes a person’s life. He changes us!

Today we celebrate the feast of three archangels Gabriel, Raphael, and Michael. In the battle against the adversary or the devil who is like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour (cf. 1 Peter 5:8), the angels are our allies. They participate in God’s saving work as his messengers. Indeed they echo God’s love for humanity. God truly never leaves us! He is with us. /Vulnerasti, 2022
