Today’s Gospel

On that occasion, Jesus said, “Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I praise you; because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to simple people. Yes, Father, this was your gracious will. Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father; and no one knows the Father except the Son, and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart; and you will find rest. For my yoke is easy; and my burden is light.”

Today’s Reflection:

The gospel encourages us to practice humility and grateful praise. Jesus, the human manifestation of the divine, is meek and humble. This tells us something else about God. No other person can know God in the way Jesus does. It tells us that high station does not result in pride. On the contrary, Jesus is humble; Even the king depicted in the first reading from Zechariah is humble. This tells us that a true disciple is called to be humble.

The reading also teaches us about grateful praise. Jesus thanks the Father for having hidden “these things” from the wise and intelligent while revealing them to “little ones”. We turn again to the psalm, and we praise and bless God; we proclaim God’s holy name. In Jesus, we have known the tender touch of God, and we are grateful. Let us recall all of the things and events that make us feel grateful for God.   /Vulnerasti, 2023
